I wish to express my gratitude...

I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science. The desire to become a member of The Mother Church and a branch church led to a healing for which I am very thankful.

Immediately prior to the time I applied for membership, I had a serious problem relating to proper employment. I was studying Christian Science to solve the problem and was receiving help from a practitioner. While I was talking to the practitioner one day, she asked me if I smoked. I felt that the question was not related to the problem at hand, but I replied that I did. I was told that smoking is not in harmony with Christian Science. On the way home I threw my cigarettes out the window of the car, more as a gesture than with any actual conviction that I had quit smoking, but I have never used tobacco since that day nor had any desire to do so.

Shortly after this experience, I mentioned to the practitioner that I wanted to become a member of The Mother Church and of the branch church that I attended. She asked me if I drank alcoholic beverages. I stated that I did, but not enough to matter. She told me that to become a member I must not drink liquor at all.
