KNOWING GOD AS ALL

Christian Science practitioners are sometimes asked by those beginning the study of Christian Science: "How can I help myself? I do not even know how to begin." A direct and helpful answer is to be found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 275): "The starting-point of divine Science is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind,—that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle."

Throughout the Bible God's allness is stressed. As one studies the Bible and Science and Health he is impressed with the fact that the basis for all metaphysical work is the allness of God, good, and the nothingness of matter, error. Christ Jesus declared that his mighty works were the result of knowing his oneness, or unity, with the Father. The Master knew that God is All-in-all and that there is none else when he declared (John 5:17), "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." Jesus fed the multitude, he healed the sick, he redeemed the sinner, and he raised the dead according to God's law. Mrs. Eddy explains in "No and Yes" (p. 30), "God's law is in three words, 'I am All;' and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law."

Understanding God's law, the spiritually minded individual demonstrates poise and confidence when confronted with sickness, disaster, or fear of lack. The knowledge of God as All unfolds the glorious continuity of being and the tender affection and friendliness of divine Love, which is always present for each one to reflect. The Psalmist sang of God's presence and power (Ps. 147:5), "Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite." Limitless Mind includes all power, all intelligence, and every idea. Evil can never project itself into divine allness, for nothing has presence or power that is not of God.
