It is with deep gratitude that I...
It is with deep gratitude that I recount some of the healings that have come to me and my family through the study and application of Christian Science.
One of these healings occurred when I was a very young student. This healing awakened me to the fact that only the spiritual understanding of God confers healing. Our son, who was at the time a teen-age boy, was taken to a hospital for an emergency operation for appendicitis. My husband was not interested at that time in Christian Science and was persuaded that an operation was necessary. However, I was not so persuaded, and I called on a practitioner for help. She prayerfully worked for me until all fear for the boy's well-being was completely erased from my thought. When I visited him at the hospital later that day, I was entirely free from a false sense of responsibility, for I realized that God was present and that all was well.
The next morning I went to the home of this practitioner, and my husband went to the hospital to be with our son during the operation. Upon my husband's arrival the boy told him that he did not need an operation. Neither my husband nor the doctor was easily persuaded; however, the boy insisted, and the doctor finally consented to repeat tests that had been given the previous day to determine the lad's condition. These tests clearly indicated his condition to be normal, and later that day he returned home. This healing took place over fifteen years ago, and it has been permanent.
Other healings our son has had through Christian Science help have been those of blood poisoning and asthma. The latter yielded without specific help as my false sense of mother love, sometimes referred to as "smother love," gave place to the realization that God is the Mother as well as the Father of man. This understanding of God as Mother sustained me during several years' separation from our son during World War II, when he was serving with the armed forces overseas. It was then I learned that distance could cause no separation, since we were both in the everpresence of Love.
I have had many healings through the study and application of Christian Science. Among them were those of chronic constipation, biliousness, and migraine, or nervous headaches. A condition on one foot that had been diagnosed by several doctors as eczema yielded as Truth took possession of my consciousness. This condition had given me much discomfort since childhood, and material remedies had failed to give me more than temporary relief.
Several years ago a painful condition of the spine was overcome as I looked away from the physical evidence and sought through prayer and study a better understanding of God. A few weeks' stay at the Sanatorium of the Christian Science Benevolent Association, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where I was lovingly cared for, helped in overcoming fear and crippling aftereffects. It was while I was having this experience that my husband took up the study of Christian Science.
For the loving help of practitioners and for class instruction from a consecrated teacher, as well as for the privilege of serving the Cause of Christian Science through branch church activities, I am truly grateful.
This expression of gratitude would not be complete without my gratefully acknowledging the life and example of Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and the unselfed work of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, to whom the Science of Jesus' teaching and healing works was revealed and who gave it to the world through her writings. Most of all I am grateful for the understanding of God and His spiritual, harmonious creation that Christian Science is bringing to the world.—(Mrs.) Kathryn E. Leslie, Schenectady, New York.
