MENTAL HOUSEKEEPING AND SPIRITUAL PROGRESS
Everyone who keeps house has, perhaps, at one time or another wished that he could clean up and straighten things out once and for all, and ever after have everything neat without further effort. But this is never possible, for it is necessary to work regularly in order to have orderly surroundings. Yet, although one may be reluctant to get at the necessary tasks, how fine and satisfying it is to see the results afterward.
Thus it is with the work we all have to do to progress spiritually. Since we seem to be having this human experience, we must work to go forward. We must purify the human self and destroy the false, mortal concept of man until we express the nature of the true man in God's image—the man that needs no progress out of error, for he already possesses perfection.
In Christian Science we learn that one must work prayerfully to achieve results; and he must work persistently, constantly, yet joyously. Mary Baker Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 449), "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing." If one has once experienced a period of great spiritual uplift and progress, the good, spiritual thinking he did will of course sustain and help him in his further tasks of going forward. Yet, truly "to continue in well doing," he must work further.
