Shortly before entering combat...

Shortly before entering combat in the Second World War, I was assigned specialized military duties for which I was wholly untrained. Prayerful metaphysical work by a Christian Science practitioner soon helped me to establish a conviction that God, all-governing Mind, firmly controlled the situation. With renewed humility I became content to let God's plan unfold unhindered and trustingly to say in the words of the Psalmist (Ps. 31:15), "My times are in thy hand." A most interesting and constructive experience followed. My new assignment was readily learned in time for combat, and its extended course offered priceless opportunities for growth in Christian Science.

Prior to our first enemy engagement, I was led to consider thoughtfully the true meaning of safety and its ever-availability. It became evident to me that freedom from danger could be experienced through a clear realization of man's God-assigned place, his at-one-ment with infinite Love. I determined in every situation to seek divine guidance, to listen intently for God's voice, and to act obediently. Opportunities soon appeared to demonstrate the Christly, saving truths I had learned.

One day I detected above the clamor and confusion of bivouac construction the faint hum of an airplane motor high overhead. Through binoculars my view instantly focused on an enemy bomber just as its bombs fell away. An immediate warning enabled the troops to reach safety before the area was struck.
