"It is good for me to draw near...
"It is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works" (Ps. 73:28).
My first impression of Christian Science came through witnessing a healing accomplished by the love and spiritual understanding of a Christian Science practitioner. My three-months-old son was greatly emaciated and was said to be dying. Though I knew nothing of Science, I had heard that it heals through prayer. A practitioner was called, and he took up prayerful work after advising me to read several verses from Psalms. The baby's recovery was marvelous, and I perceived that God is the healer in Christian Science.
The fact that God heals our diseases came as a great joy. From that moment on I used no material remedy. I can never tell what the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, has meant to me throughout the years. Our family has used the truth gained from reading it not only for the healing of sickness, but as a preventive, especially at times when there was fear of contagion.
For about thirty years I had a growth on one side of my face. It finally became very troublesome because of blisters forming on it. Shortly before the close of the Second World War, I attended a noonday lecture on Christian Science. I had not thought of the affliction, but just went to the lecture thinking to learn something more of Christian Science. The lecturer made it plain that as divine Mind's idea man could have no abnormal growth or deformity.
When I left the theater where the lecture was given my thought was imbued with the scientific truth expressed by the lecturer and with a determination to hold to this healing truth. Several days later I noticed that the growth had diminished to about half its size and appeared to be drying up. In a few days it was entirely gone. This was a joyful experience. I thanked God for the healing and felt deeply grateful to the lecturer.
Throughout the forty-three years since the healing of my son, every sickness which has occurred in our family has been healed either by my own work in Science or with the help of a practitioner. Among the conditions healed were neuralgia, blood poisoning, typhoid fever, influenza, pneumonia, severe burns, cuts, and injuries from accidents, one of which was the cause of a stiff knee.
The extent of my gratitude to God for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and for Mrs. Eddy, our precious Leader, is immeasurable. For the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures which Christian Science gives I am exceedingly grateful. Through the study of this Science I have found a more lovable concept of God and have gained a better understanding of Jesus' teachings. I should like to express deep gratitude for our practitioners and for all the workers in the Christian Science movement. Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and the wonderful privilege of class instruction increase my thanks to God.—(Mrs.) Eleanor G. Heuer, Modesto, California.
