Before becoming interested in...

Before becoming interested in Christian Science I had some very unpleasant experiences with ivy poisoning, and I became afraid even to go into the woods. The medical profession could give me no help. After I became interested in Christian Science, my fear of poison ivy was overcome, and I am very grateful not to have passed this fear along to my children.

One day, about two years ago, while working in my garden, I saw some poison ivy. I felt that I must do something about this; so I put on rubber gloves and cut the ivy all out. Then I forgot about the incident. However, that night I saw a big red splotch across my forehead and several other red spots on my face and neck, and they all itched.

My first impulse was to ask for help in Christian Science, but I then realized that I was not a bit afraid. I knew that God is good and created only good, that He therefore could not create a poison leaf to torment His children, and that the suggestion of ivy poisoning was merely a false notion over which I certainly could have dominion. I went to sleep without any fear, and the next morning there were no red splotches or itching. A slight sensation remained on the skin of my forehead for a day or two and then disappeared. There has been no further difficulty from poison ivy.
