With a heart overflowing with...
With a heart overflowing with gratitude I give thanks to God for the teachings of Christian Science, given to the world by Mary Baker Eddy. Some time ago I felt led to do some protective work on employment, although at that time I was permanently employed. Three weeks later a substantial reduction in force took place in my office; and although I was not dismissed, I began to lose two or three days of work a week. The words of Mrs. Eddy's hymn beginning, "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, p. 14), came to my thought and brought a sense of guidance.
I made application in person and by mail to several places, but was unable to find even temporary employment. Then I began to pray more earnestly, using this thought from the Bible (Luke 12:32): "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." A few days later, while on my way to apply at another place, the thought came to me to go to a certain government agency. This thought came so clearly that I immediately turned in that direction. When I arrived I found that examinations were being held for a position for which I could qualify. I took an examination and submitted an application for employment.
When I returned home I received a telephone call from a friend whose husband had heard I was seeking employment, and she told me there was a temporary position available where her husband was working. I knew then that my prayer was being answered, and I obtained the position. Before the first week had ended, the manager told me my work was very satisfactory, and I was given an increase in pay effective from the day I started. He explained that it was the company's policy to withhold a week's salary, but that if I was in need of funds, he could advance me a portion of my salary, My need had again been met, and I realized more fully the good that comes to us when we rely entirely on God for our needs. When this temporary employment ended, I was appointed to a position in a federal agency.
