A number of years ago, several...

A number of years ago, several members of my family passed on during a short space of time. I had been brought up in an orthodox church, and during all of these experiences I had prayed as best I knew how. However, my prayers were of no avail. I began wondering why, if there was an all-powerful and all-knowing God, He would allow these dear ones to suffer and pass on. In other words, I began to doubt God's goodness, and even to doubt that there was a God.

Then I too became ill. For several years I refused to go to doctors because they had been unable to help my loved ones. Finally, when I became so weak that I could scarcely move from my bed to the davenport, a friend almost compelled me to see a specialist. The specialist said that there was no hope for me unless I was operated on immediately and that since I had lost much blood, there was little chance that I would survive the operation.

I went home thoroughly persuaded against the operation. The first thing I did was to write a dear sister-in-law to tell her the doctor's verdict. This sister-in-law was a Christian Scientist, but I did not write her expecting any help in Science, as I had no faith whatever in it. I merely wrote her because I usually confided in her.
