Church Dedications

Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.

Chester, Cheshire, England (First Church).

First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chester, was dedicated at morning and evening services on Sunday.

The first regular Christian Science services locally were held at a private house in Sandy-lane, Boughton, and in 1910 a room was rented for public services at 68, Watergate-street.... Throughout the First World War, Sunday morning services were held without interruption.

In 1936... rooms were rented in Forest House, where a Sunday School was also held, and a Reading Room was obtained opposite the Cathedral. Membership increased fourfold, and annual Christian Science lectures were held in the Town Hall.

Early in the Second World War the Forest House premises were taken over by the Government, and alternative accommodation in the Falcon Cafe was used between 1940 and 1947. For a time during this period the Sunday School had its home at White Friars.

In 1946 St. Olave School was auctioned, and the church bought it.... The first service was held eighteen months after purchase.

The mortgage has been steadily repaid, and it was a grant from the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy which eventually led to the dedication service.
