THE DEMONSTRABLE NATURE OF GOD

When we look deeply into divine Mind we realize that man's origin and the source of his existence must be divine Love. The spiritual universe, including man, evidences God's nature. We seem to possess a mind and will apart from the perfect Mind, but we learn the necessity of turning away from the mortal concepts in order to avoid the penalties of sin, sickness, and death. This triad of errors is destroyed by the triunity of Life, Truth, and Love, which constitute the essential nature of Deity.

The term God as understood in Christian Science has a sevenfold meaning. It is defined as follows in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 465): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." These seven synonymous terms combine as one, for there is one God as the Scripture repeatedly declares.

By means of prayer we seek to demonstrate our unity with the one God, and in so doing we constantly find ourselves turning to one or another of the seven synonyms. We commence our prayer by adopting the standard of Christ Jesus—perfect God and perfect man. This is the standard of Christian Science, and we must never desert this standard. But we are continually assailed with the suggestion that perfect God is not easily available and that perfect man may be the model, but the model is not "me." Certainly the mortal concept is not the perfect man, but the artist does not turn from the model because his picture does not yet measure up to his ideal. On the contrary, he endeavors to improve his work.
