Many years ago I found it necessary to take a physical examination in order to enroll in a swimming class. The doctor told me that I had a goiter. I was permitted to join the class, but was told that I must have something done about the goiter very soon. I called for the help of a Christian Science practitioner and endeavored to apply what I knew of Science to the problem. However, I also began to watch the goiter and was greatly distressed as it grew alarmingly.

In my thought there lurked a temptation to submit to surgery, and as my anxiety increased I seriously considered this course. Then one day it occurred to me that even if I did have the goiter cut out, it would not remove my belief in goiters and whenever I saw someone else with one I would still believe it to be true. I pondered this fact for a while and realized that a belief could never be removed by a surgeon's knife, but would have to be removed mentally.

Some weeks later I visited my mother in another city, and the minute she saw me she exclaimed, "Why, it is all gone!" For the first time I was aware that I had been healed. As I reviewed the situation, I realized that the whole picture had entirely left my thought, and I did not even know when it had happened.
