While on a business trip in a...
While on a business trip in a large eastern city far from my home I was asked by a business associate, "Would you depend totally on Christian Science in the event of an attack of appendicitis or an accident of some kind?" Unhesitatingly I replied in the affirmative, remarking that I had experienced many wonderful healings through Christian Science alone. Though the matter was dropped, the question remained with me. I gained special inspiration through reading and rereading an article in a Christian Science periodical stressing the importance of proving what we profess. It was clear to me that the proof of my answer was in the daily practice of reflecting the qualities of Truth which Christian Science teaches us to express.
On the last evening of my stay I turned my ankle and injured it so seriously that I was scarcely able to reach my hotel room. After two hours of reading Christian Science literature and denying the reality of the accident, I kept a dinner engagement made previously. However, so much alarm was expressed and so many conflicting and confusing suggestions were offered that the condition of the ankle and foot became worse, and I was advised to have immediate medical attention. Instead, I returned to the hotel, telephoned a practitioner in my home town, and requested help. Then I retired and slept comfortably all night.
The next morning I arose and walked almost normally as I went back and forth in the room, packing for the return train trip originally scheduled. In the afternoon I entrained for the overnight journey, walking the long distance to the train without any discomfort whatever. The practitioner had pointed out that the truth is an established fact and that it was not my responsibility to convince individuals of its proof. This experience was to me a milestone in the demonstration of Christian Science. —(Miss) Gertrude Goodrich, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
