"A WELLSPRING OF LIFE"

The author of Proverbs gives us this assuring verse (16:22): "Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it." A well-spring is a fountainhead which provides a constant supply of water from a source. The flowing spring was a favorite figure with Biblical writers, for they lived in an arid country. The wellspring reminded them that God is the never-ending source of life, which understanding opens wide. The living waters of Spirit—love, truthfulness, wisdom, purity—well up within the thought of those who look to God as their inseparable source and who devote themselves to helping others know the truth of His great goodness.

Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 1), "To kindle all minds with a gleam of gratitude, the new idea that comes welling up from infinite Truth needs to be understood." Once one understands something of the primal facts of being, which Christian Science reveals, spiritual inspiration flows freely. New ideas continually come to thought. Spiritual abilities are invigorated by the knowledge that God, Mind, is All, that man is Mind's intelligent idea, that the weak and limited mortal is a counterfeit of the real man. Such knowledge demonstrates life and restores health.

If great invigoration of thought does not follow one's study of Christian Science, the reason is that the debris of materialism is still clogging one's thinking. Persistent, honest ridding oneself of this rubbish opens within consciousness the up-springing floods of Truth. Anyone who believes that he can feel the quickening action of spiritual ideas unfolding their power without clearing away the sins and false material trusts which cling to mortals will meet with disappointment.
