Prospering Our Cause in Town and City

[Note: Extracts from reports prepared for the Reading Room Division, one by the librarian and the other by the executive board of branch churches with well-located Reading Rooms.]

Patchogue, L. I., New York

For over twenty-five years our Reading Room was maintained on the second floor of a business building. In 1950 the attention of the membership as a whole was called to the reported increased activity of those churches which had relocated their Christian Science Reading Rooms to ground-floor quarters. Our members had never seemed financially free to take this forward step. Now, however, we were awake to this need. Our Reading Room committee looked for suitable quarters in the business section where pedestrian traffic was heavy. From 1950 until 1954, locations were recommended to the executive board, but upon investigation none of these was found representative.

In April, 1954, the members voted to allocate to a Reading Room fund the collections taken on the fourth Sunday of each month, Just two months later our present location on the street level, only a few steps from the center of town, was found and recommended to the board, who called a special meeting of the members to consider it. This location was unanimously approved. The quarters were remodeled to meet the requirements of a Christian Science Reading Room and pleasingly decorated. On August 30 we opened to the public an attractive salesroom and a study room, which is conducive to quiet, prayerful work in Christian Science.
