It is with a heart full of love and gratitude that I give this testimony of my first healing in Christian Science. I had been brought up in a lovely Christian home and belonged to an orthodox church; so I felt that as far as religion was concerned I had all that was needed. Although I had heard of Christian Science, I was very much opposed to it and often went out of my way to express my dislike for it.

Then one day I became very ill. I went to the best hospitals; I had the best doctors, but they did not give me any hope. They said I was suffering from a very dangerous disease of the heart. They told me that I could not live more than a year and that I might pass on at any moment.

One afternoon I was at home alone when the words "Christian Science" came to me. I responded: "Oh, Christian Science. I don't believe in it."

Later that same afternoon the thought of Christian Science again came to me. This time I telephoned to a friend of mine who was a Christian Scientist. When she answered, all I could say was, "I have to die, and I don't want to die."

She knew my voice and said: "My dear, you do not have to die. I am coming right out to see you." For the first time in all those weeks of physical and mental agony I felt calm. She came to see me that same afternoon and told me many wonderful things about Christian Science. Then she showed me how to get in touch with a practitioner.

My healing was slow, for I could not forget all the things the doctors had told me. However, the practitioner was patient, loving, and understanding. Just when everything appeared dark and hopeless and I felt I could not go on any longer, the healing suddenly came. What joy it was to know that all my suffering was gone and to feel well and strong again!

About a year after this healing I saw one of the physicians who had told me I could not live more than a year. He looked at me in astonishment. Then he put his hand on my shoulder and said: "Is this really you? I have thought about you many times and often wondered if you had passed on. Tell me what you have been doing to look so well."

I answered, "You may not like what I am going to say: I took up the study of Christian Science, and now I am well."

He looked at me for some time and then said, "I believe you, for no one but God could have healed you."

That was many years ago, and since then I have had numerous healings. I am sincerely grateful for the years of activity I have had in a Church of Christ, Scientist. My heart goes out in loving gratitude to God for our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, through whose revelation we have the wonderful truth that meets every human need. (Mrs.) Ida M.
