Again Regarding Procedures and Practices

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, sets forth in the Manual of The Mother Church the plan for conducting our Sunday Schools. (See Article XX and page 127.) In accordance with Sections 1 and 10 of Article XXIII of the Manual, each branch of The Mother Church makes its own rules for details of procedure. However, branch churches and societies sometimes are interested to know about procedures in The Mother Church Sunday School and in other branches; hence, the following comments are offered.

Hymns

In the Sunday School of The Mother Church one of Mrs. Eddy's hymns is sung each Sunday because of its spiritualizing effect on the thought of the pupils and the staff. It is usually chosen as the opening hymn. After being announced with the author's name it is read in its entirety by the Superintendent. During instruction in classes teachers sometimes ask questions about the hymn in order to ascertain whether the pupils are enjoying the rich blessings that its words open up to the student when it is sung understandingly and prayerfully. Hymns which are not written by our Leader are announced without the author's name, and only the first stanza is read.
