I am grateful for the many blessings...
I am grateful for the many blessings that have come to me through the study and practice of Christian Science. The use of tobacco and liquor is a thing of the past. Eyeglasses, which I had used daily for thirty years, have been put aside. A painful condition of the back has been overcome, and I have been healed of migraine.
A more recent healing was that of a growth. I first noticed it about ten years ago, but paid little attention to it. In the course of the next few years it grew considerably larger. Thereafter I did do some prayerful work from time to time, but my intermittent efforts were not satisfactory. One Wednesday evening at a testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist, I heard a testimony of a healing of a similar condition. This testimony alerted me to the necessity of giving myself specific treatment, which from then on became a part of my daily prayerful work.
There appeared to be little or no progress, however, and I asked for Christian Science help, which was lovingly given. I was told that this growth, or swelling, was no more part of me than a barnacle is part of a ship. The work in my behalf was continued for several weeks with no apparent results. During this period I found it was of the utmost importance to be obedient to the requirement in the Manual of The Mother Church by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy (Art. VIII, Sect. 6): "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind." Mortal mind prompted such questions as: "What is this inconsistency? First you say there is a growth you want to be rid of, and then you say there is no such growth. How do you know you are making any progress if you are not supposed to look at, examine, or otherwise acknowledge the very thing you are trying to be free of?" I knew there was no reason to heed such questions, and I emptied my consciousness of them.
