THE PUBLICAN'S PRAYER

Humility in its true sense bears no hint of servitude. Jesus has furnished humanity with the most outstanding example of humility, and yet he is referred to as Master. His constant acknowledgment of God as the source of all good did not prevent him from saying, according to the Gospel of John (8:54), "It is my Father that honoureth me."

The Master taught men to give God the glory for all accomplishment. He sent those he healed on their way praising God and magnifying His name. In a parable addressed to "certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others" (Luke 18:9), Jesus contrasted a Pharisee, who thanked God that he was not as other men, with a publican who petitioned God for mercy. In concluding the parable, Jesus said, "I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."

Mary Baker Eddy expressed great humility, and she admonished Christian Scientists to follow her only as far as she followed Christ. Her freedom from self-aggrandizement enabled her to fulfill her divine mission of bringing to humanity the promised Comforter and thus to win her place of honor among men.
