SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT AND UNDERSTANDING

The pathway to healing as revealed through Christian Science leads away from a material sense of man's existence to the scientific understanding of existence as wholly spiritual. Those who discern the path and go forward find that their spiritual perception and understanding grow progressively clearer and that they are able increasingly to demonstrate God's scientific healing law, resulting in better health and more individual harmony.

Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 162), "The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind." My own experience as a student of Christian Science is a good illustration of the human mind's changing its base and, through spiritual discernment and scientific understanding, yielding to the harmony of the divine Mind.

When I first began to investigate Christian Science I found that it teaches that God, divine Mind, is omnipresent, thus always instantly available in times of need. One day, while I was pondering some of the statements I had been reading in Science and Health, a new concept of God and man unfolded to me. I discerned man to be God's very own expression or manifestation. Hence, the absolute proof of God's presence was my conscious awareness of my own spiritual identity— my own existence.
