Before my birth my mother had been told by doctors that she could never survive another childbirth, yet through the help of a Christian Science practitioner and her own understanding of Science the birth was completely harmonious. Our family lived in or near small towns where there were no Christian Science churches; so as I grew to young manhood I knew no Christian Science students of my own age. A longing for right companionship and continued growth in harmony was fulfilled, however, when a young Christian Scientist from another state visited relatives in our community. The friendship that resulted led to our marriage, which has proved to be one of the happiest experiences of my life, for my wife and I have worked shoulder to shoulder through the years in making our demonstrations of the truth.

One healing, which took some time to complete but which was very important to me in my occupation, was that of fear of climbing. As a young man I was at times embarrassed and disgusted that it was so difficult for me to do work that required any climbing. In spite of this I applied for a job painting houses during the depression. By constantly affirming that man as the child of God is unfallen, upright, and unafraid, I was able to do my work, and gradually the fear lessened. Then we moved to a city where the buildings were higher. The first time I worked on a swing staging my legs were so rigid from fear that they cramped, and I had to sit down on the plank. The same process of affirming the truth helped me to work out this situation each time it came up and finally freed me from fear. In fact I now much prefer working off the ground.

When I was sprayed with molten aluminum while working in a plant making supplies for the armed forces, the company doctor made dire predictions that I would have to spend from three to six months in a hospital and that there would be grave danger of infection. I was kept busy mentally reversing his predictions.
