"REVERSING THE MATERIAL FABLE"

"If you wish to know the spiritual fact, you can discover it by reversing the material fable, be the fable pro or con,—be it in accord with your preconceptions or utterly contrary to them." Thus on page 129 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy shows how to expose the falsity and deceptiveness of material sense testimony.

It is recorded in the Bible that what appeared to the senses to be an approaching defeat from overwhelming odds was quickly reversed when a young man's eyes were opened through spiritual awakening. We read (II Kings 6:17): "And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."

Many times during the course of our everyday experience we are confronted with the unreliability of the material senses. A mirage on the desert, the illusion which seems to place the ocean and the ships upon it in the sky as we approach from a distance, the sensation that our train is moving when the one next to us is in motion and we are standing still—these illustrate the unreality of the evidence of the corporeal senses. We are constantly called upon to reverse this false evidence in daily living.
