Signs of the Times

Norman C. Brillhart, President, Pennsylvania State Education Association in an address reported in the Daily Item, Sunbury, Pennsylvania

"It is the duty of the schools to provide a climate which is favorable for the religious growth of children. The schools cannot... teach a specific denominational approach to religion, but the schools must teach moral and spiritual values. ...

"Unless our children are taught moral and spiritual values their education is empty and lacks significance and purpose. It is like a power without a conscience. With the tremendous power which is today within the grasp of man it is important that it be guided by the finest principle which can be devised. The development of the conscience necessary to guide this power is the function of the church and school," said Mr. Brillhart in commenting on the responsibilities thrust upon mankind by the coming of the atomic age.
