THE IMPORTANCE OF GOD'S EXPRESSION

Spiritual man is important to God because he is the living witness of God's being. In the forty-third chapter of Isaiah the prophet states this spiritual fact in these words: "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God."

Individually and collectively man is the witness of God, who is Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 303): "God, without the image and likeness of Himself, would be a nonentity, or Mind unexpressed. He would be without a witness or proof of His own nature." Man is the work of God.

Christ Jesus, the master Christian, never lost sight of his spiritual individuality and identity. His understanding of his relationship to God, together with his spiritual origin, enabled him to meet fearlessly all of evil's claims to power and conquer them. When he was brought before Pontius Pilate for trial, he answered Pilate's question, "Art thou a king then?" with the significant words, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth" (John 18: 37). This was the purpose of Jesus' great mission—to be God's witness and show to all the way of salvation.
