AWAKENING TO REALITY

To cure sickness one needs first to understand what sickness is. The countless healings which Christian Science has accomplished should convince the world that this Science explains the actual nature of sickness, as well as the spiritual method of destroying it. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 417), "To the Christian Science healer, sickness is a dream from which the patient needs to be awakened."

The fact here stated simplifies healing. It eliminates the necessity for minute examination of the body and places the problem of illness on a purely mental basis. It shows disease to be an experience of a false dream-consciousness, the carnal mind described in Paul's letter to the Romans (8:7). And it discloses the necessity to be one's awakening from this mortal dream to real consciousness, the Christ-consciousness, which reflects the one Mind, God.

However deeply asleep in the sense of life in matter one may be, the Christly self, eternally awake to life in Spirit, is preserved in God. One's aim should be to become conscious of the presence and reality of the true self. This requires more than the admission that one is actually God's spiritual likeness. It calls for the denial of matter based upon the understanding that all material objects are mental concepts —that is, figments of the mortal dream—hence not to be feared or idolized. It necessitates giving up the belief that the personal sense of life is actual. And most of all, it demands that one love good with such purity of devotion that he is able to reject all willful and evil impulses of thought.
