I first learned of Christian Science...

I first learned of Christian Science in 1898. In a public library in London, England, I picked up a Sentinel and read it. I was nineteen years old at that time and critical of whatever I read. However, there was nothing in the Sentinel with which I disagreed, and it produced an unusual calm in me. I left the library a changed youth, and I knew that Christian Science was going to be the religion for me.

The next year found me in South Africa, serving my country in the Boer War. During my first battle the thought of God's protecting care was singing in my heart. I came out of the battle without a scratch, although a bullet had passed through the loose part of my left sleeve, and the wooden peg of my canteen had been shot off.

After the war I was with the British Army in India for thirty years. My interest in Christian Science continued, and when at long last I left the Army and went into my own business in Calcutta, India, I joined the Christian Science Society there. Later I made my home in Australia and joined a branch church, to which I still belong. I also joined The Mother Church. Since then I have progressed in gaining spiritual understanding, putting off the old man and putting on the new.
