For many years I have been a...
For many years I have been a student of Mrs. Eddy's writings and a delighted reader of our Christian Science periodicals. I consider my membership in The Mother Church a great privilege, and I feel a strong impulsion to offer my testimony of the positive action of Truth in healing.
Some years ago a small growth appeared on my body. Later the area surrounding it became inflamed and painful, It was Easter, and I found my thought dwelling on the humility, purity, selflessness, and affection manifested by Christ Jesus. Also I felt inspired by Mrs. Eddy's words (Science and Health, p. 10), "Prayer means that we desire to walk and will walk in the light so far as we receive it, even though with bleeding footsteps, and that waiting patiently on the Lord, we will leave our real desires to be rewarded by Him." I realized that the all-knowing Mind knows all true desires and that no good thing is ever withheld from God's children. But fear overwhelmed me at the appearance of the physical condition, and I engaged the services of a Christian Science practitioner. She called my attention to a Scriptural passage which was particularly uplifting to my thought (Mal. 4:2): "Unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings." Interpreting "the Sun of righteousness" as the light of spiritual understanding, I was able to rise in thought above the sense of self and to pray, not for material evidence of healing, but rather for increased receptivity to spiritual facts and for a greater degree of self-immolation.
The second night after the practitioner took up work for me, the growth came away without my being conscious of it, and a quick healing followed. I am very grateful for this experience, for it indicated that mental surgery is as possible as any other phase of healing taught and practiced in Christian Science.—(Miss) Caroline Reiff, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
