The words, "We glean spiritual...
The words, "We glean spiritual harvests from our own material losses," written by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 79), have been proved true in my experience. I heard of Christian Science in 1914 and accepted its teachings in theory, thinking that if all material aid should ever be removed, I could depend on God to care for me. It was not until 1939, however, that I found myself in just that situation and with a teen-age daughter to support. Except for fifty dollars and our clothes, we were without any possessions, and I had never earned my living in the business world.
Nevertheless I had a great feeling of expectancy and gratitude during this experience and felt relieved to know that God does care for His children. I asked a friend to call her mother, a practitioner in another city, to help me, and I gratefully heeded her loving counsel to obey the words of our Way-shower, Christ Jesus (Matt. 6:31, 33): "Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?... But seek ye first the kingdom of God. and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
It was very clear to me that my real work was to reflect God and that the payment for this work was spiritual and ample to meet all my needs. There came a Sunday morning when I had only fifty cents, which I intended to put in the collection at church services in a Christian Science Society, which I attended regularly. My room rent was not due until the next day, and I had been invited by a friend to dinner after church. Also my daughter was visiting friends. So I felt that for that day I was well cared for, and I never doubted or looked ahead with any fear. Rather, I had an exalted feeling that a wonderful experience was at hand.
