THE SCIENCE OF HEALTH

A Scientific sense of health includes more than what is termed good matter. Unless human consciousness is educated and instructed in what constitutes good health, good matter today could be bad matter tomorrow. Health is not a property of matter, is not produced by it or controlled by it. It is not a variable, fluctuating condition of the physical body, subject to the laws of heredity, medicine, and hygiene. If sickness is not to be found in the material body, neither is health. If neither one is to be found in the body, of what avail is it to look for them there?

Christian Science reveals that permanent health is spiritual and scientific, that it is found in our understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him. True health is lasting, changeless, not dependent on age, time, or circumstance. It means holiness of thought, or wholeness, the consciousness of harmony and of nothing else. One does not have to seek it or wait for it to appear. He needs only to recognize it and claim it.

Mary Baker Eddy explains the fact that it is not matter or the body which needs to be changed or healed, but the thinking of the one who is sick. Writing on page 7 of "The People's Idea of God," she says: "To remove those objects of sense called sickness and disease, we must appeal to mind to improve its subjects and objects of thought, and give to the body those better delineations. Scientific discovery and the inspiration of Truth have taught me that the health and character of man become more or less perfect as his mind-models are more or less spiritual."
