Signs of the Times
An editorial in the
Free Press, Burlington, Vermont
Why should we observe a day of thanksgiving? The most obvious answer is, in order that we may concentrate in one day of the year on thanking God for all we have received through His boundless love.
That is true, but is it the whole truth? Why did the Pilgrims establish a day of thanksgiving after a year in this (to them) new world? Naturally they were thankful for survival and wanted to express that thanks to the God they worshiped. But their first year on the American continent had been a very hard one. Many of their number had perished. Those who had withstood the rigors of the New England winter and the frontier life had suffered many hardships. From a material point of view, they had comparatively little for which to praise God with thankful hearts.
