Almost six years spent in military...

Almost six years spent in military service caused the deferment of so many of my hopes that I frequently found myself in tears. Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 310), "To impersonalize scientifically the material sense of existence—rather than cling to personality—is the lesson of today." When I pondered this truth, I knew that I had been making too much of personality. As I regarded my situation more impersonally my self-pity ceased, and my environment became more harmonious. I am indeed grateful that a better understanding of Christian Science can free one from the smothering sense of personality.

To me it is a proven fact that Science protects as well as cures. I humbly say, "Thank God for the Christian Science Wartime Ministers," for through their consecrated work the loving arm of The Mother Church was always present to welcome me to every new place, giving me a deep sense of peace, protection, and love. Embraced in such love, I experienced no loneliness or homesickness.

On page 39 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy states, "We must have trials and self-denials, as well as joys and victories, until all error is destroyed." I found that many of my trials were overcome and that rightful hopes were fulfilled after I had searched my consciousness to clear it of resentment, jealousy, envy, or discouragement. A dear Christian Science teacher revealed to me that we have an unlimited abundance of God's qualities to reflect every instant; so there can be no reason for self-aggrandizement.
