THE LEAST LAMB

I saw a pastured lamb today,
It was the youngest in the fold.
I stood awhile to watch this gay
Small creature but a few days old.

Expression of the Father's art,
This happy symbol did suffice
To make the altar of a heart
A place more fair for sacrifice.

So new to earth, so innocent
It was that none could look thereon
And feel no heavenly content.
Nor meditate the words of John.

No one could see it standing there
Close to its ewe upon green sod
And not think on the Father's heir,
Who was himself the Lamb of God.
