In early childhood my sister and...

In early childhood my sister and I used to revel in the lovely Bible stories that were told to us at bedtime by the older members of the family. They were so real to us that they lived in our hearts, and we looked forward to the time when we would see such wonderful happenings as they described.

My father was a well-known doctor in our town, and during certain hours in the evening he saw patients in his surgery at home. One day I saw in the hall a sad case waiting to go into the surgery. I ran into the dining room and said to an older member of the family, "Could we heal that person like Jesus did?"

The answer was most disappointing and changed my whole thought about the Bible. It was something like this: "Oh! Jesus was someone special. We could not do anything like that." After a brief exchange of questions and unsatisfactory answers, based on the teachings of the old scholastic theology, I went to my room, wrapped my Bible carefully, and put it away in a drawer as something which was beyond my understanding and on which I should not waste my time.
