"REJOICE, FOR THOU ART WHOLE"

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ... All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." So wrote the beloved disciple, John, in the first chapter of his Gospel. God's creation of all and its necessarily good and spiritual nature are the foundation of Christian Science, which declares that man is now, at this very moment, well, happy, and complete. This is the truth of man, and this is the truth of you and me; and this truth is demonstrable. It is cause for rejoicing that nothing can ever change the absolute fact of man's present perfection as the image and likeness of God. Then where does all the discord, the sickness, and the poverty come from? There can be only one answer. It must come from a misconception of God and man. Although a spiritual fact never changes, it may appear to be hidden by many false beliefs of the carnal mind.

Much may be learned about the machinations of so-called evil belief from a study of the material view of creation as found in the second chapter of Genesis and a few succeeding chapters. Here it is seen how misconceptions regarding God and man find entrance into human thought. Adam and Eve symbolize the thought which accepts the lying suggestions of evil as real. Through Christian Science we learn to challenge the thoughts which come to us and to determine whether they conform to the true spiritual facts of God and man or are suggestions which spring from a counterfeit sense of creation.

This may be successfully accomplished by strict obedience to a statement made by Mary Baker Eddy in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." On pages 82 and 83 of this book she writes, "In a world of sin and sensuality hastening to a greater development of power, it is wise earnestly to consider whether it is the human mind or the divine Mind which is influencing one." It is human thinking in the guise of personal sense which says, "I am sick; I am discouraged; I am a failure." Mind declares, "Man is well; man is perfect; man's destiny is fulfillment." To which voice are we listening and responding?
