While acting as manager of a Swiss hotel, I had among my guests a man and his wife from England who created such an atmosphere of tender kindness that it exerted a great influence over me. This feeling grew so strong that eventually I decided to ask my guests if they could tell me why I was so attracted to them. The man then kindly asked me to come to their room. There he placed the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy in my hands, saying that if he and his wife were different from any of my other guests, these two textbooks of Christian Science were the cause, for nothing else could be. In this way the seed was sown for what was to develop into my further interest in Christian Science.

Months Later, alter hearing a lecture on this Science, I decided to go to a practitioner for the purpose of learning more about the religion. Several interviews were very lovingly granted me. On one of these occasions the practitioner told me that smoking was not in harmony with Christian Science. To this remark f protested that under no circumstances would I give up smoking. A few weeks passed, and one day I noticed that I had stopped smoking and had lost the taste for tobacco. I have never smoked since that time.

For years I had had the habit of taking a daily purgative in the form of tea or pills. This became no longer necessary as I gained an understanding of Mrs. Eddy's words (Science and Health, p. 283), "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action." This further proof of the efficacy of Christian Science healing resulted in my wife's full agreement with me that we would throw away all the medicines in our well-filled cupboard.
