CONTROLLING EMOTIONS
WE live to glorify God. What greater purpose can life hold for us? We glorify God by expressing His righteousness—claiming nothing of ourselves, but giving all glory to God. Righteousness is synonymous with right consciousness. It signifies motives and actions patterned by God, divine Principle, Soul, Spirit, Mind, Life, Truth, and Love. The bliss of Soul is not seen in religious ecstasy or emotion. Hysteria and all forms of material emotion are opposed to the expression of Soul. Soul expresses depth of feeling, an awareness of the needs of others, a deep spiritual compassion, and a loving, pure, tender feeling toward everyone.
To be moved with compassion, as Jesus was, is to be stirred by Soul-sense, to be aware of the motion of Spirit. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 85), "This Soul-sense comes to the human mind when the latter yields to the divine Mind."
Some critics have believed Christian Scientists to be unsympathetic; others have accused them of emotionalism. Neither view is correct. Christian Science causes one to feel the need of others. It awakens a greater sense of compassion for the sufferer, and it is through this compassion that healing takes place.
