An Enlightening Visit

A student of Christian Science writes:

My visit to the Christian Science pavilion at the Rhodes Centenary Exhibition in Bulawayo coincided with that of three young men— Rhodesians—who said they had found this little room, on more than one occasion, something of a haven of tranquillity and shade in the heart of the Exhibition's flamboyancy and brilliance.

This simple pavilion is set at the meeting place of paths leading from the "African Village," from the large Theatre Royal, and from the "Hall of Industries." Thousands of visitors from all over the world pass by the pavilion daily, Many, lured perhaps by the shade of a large Msasa tree in the center of the garden forecourt, come into this room to rest, to talk, and to read the Christian Science books, pamphlets, and periodicals, including The Christian Science Monitor, arranged on the tables beside chairs set about the room—all of these loaned by members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bulawayo.

The worker whose turn it was to look after the pavilion the day I was there told me how astonished she has been to discover that numbers of Africans are interested in the healing and doctrine of Christian Science. Some already knew a good deal about Mary Baker Eddy and some had already been helped. "The need is undoubtedly there among Africans," she said. "They are already reaching out for the truth."

She and another attendant found immediate sympathy among visitors —four hundred signed the visitors' book in the Exhibition's first thirty days for Christian Scientists' belief in healing as Jesus healed, a simple conception which Africans appeared at once to have understood.

One wall of the room is completely taken up with mounted displays of the Monitor. Not unnaturally articles dealing with African subjects were particularly singled out for display.

My visit here showed that the leaven of Truth is at work, and that irrespective of race and color the healing power of the ever-present Christ, as revealed in Christian Science, is increasingly felt.
