I shall never cease to be grateful for my first healing in Christian Science, although I did not at that time accept this religion, I was in a distant city when I was overtaken by pneumonia. For several weeks I suffered much distress. A friend wrote my mother, who was a student of Christian Science, and explained my case to her. On the day she received the letter, I was healed.

Some years later I contracted double pneumonia, a worse condition than I had had before, I asked for Christian Science treatment, for I knew nothing else could help me. My mother read to me every day from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and with the help of a practitioner I was completely healed. In the more than twenty years since then I have had no recurrence of pneumonia. Even with this healing, however, I did not become a student of Christian Science until some time afterward.

While I was in the Army, on the eve of going overseas I was taken very ill and was placed in the hospital. The doctors said that I had a very serious case of arthritis, and I was discharged from the Army. I came home and took up the study of Christian Science for this difficulty. Although at first I could not understand what I read, I was advised to keep reading. I was ready to be obedient, and every day I read Mrs. Eddy's writings, the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, and the authorized periodicals, from which I received much inspiration. During this time, also, my mother prayerfully worked for me.
