When I was a boy my father had several unsuccessful operations for a severe physical condition, and various surgeons told him that he could live only about one more year. He then was healed through Christian Science treatment. Later he became a Christian Science practitioner and was with us for many years. His instantaneous healing of the tobacco habit, which was so ingrained that he had smoked numerous cigars each day, and his release from extreme nervousness and suffering made a lasting impression on me.

Thereafter I was brought up in the lovely atmosphere of a Christian Science home and protected from childhood diseases and accidents, but strangely enough I was not ready for some time to accept Christian Science fully. However, I did have great respect for it, and I told myself that I would turn to it if I was ever in need of it.

Later I left home and began smoking and drinking. A serious disease set in, and the medical remedies I used failed to heal me. When my troubles became more than I could bear, I bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and started to read it.
