MAN DOES NOT RETIRE

"Except for the error of measuring and limiting all that is good and beautiful, man would enjoy more than threescore years and ten and still maintain his vigor, freshness, and promise. Man, governed by immortal Mind, is always beautiful and grand. Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness." These statements made by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 246) hold great encouragement for men. For when "vigor, freshness, and promise" are seen to be mental qualities, independent of matter, they cannot be depleted.

Man, scientifically understood as the reflection of the one supreme governing intelligence, infinite divine Mind, cannot retire into inactivity. He is endowed with divine intelligence and immeasurable capabilities. This becomes apparent in human experience proportionably to our relinquishment of the mortal and material concept of things and our adoption of the spiritual and immortal concept.

One of the mistakes of mortals is to believe that matter constitutes and controls man. They then submit to so-called material law, which would keep them earth-bound with doubt, fear, discouragement, and inactivity. Yet the prophet Isaiah saw and declared (40:31), "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
