THE MULTITUDE

He had compassion on the multitude.
He did not scorn their ignorance, nor feel
Impatience at their constant questioning.
He did not tear resistance, nor resent
The stones that threatened him; he did not doubt
That he could prove the power of Truth and Love
He had compassion, and the multitude
Was healed and fed and blessed.

To have compassion on the multitude
Is still the only way to bring release
From ignorance, disease, and poverty,
To silence hate and strife.

When superstition darkens thought, and pride
Defies instruction, when the haunting fear
Of impotence and suffering beclouds
Intelligence, when want makes greedy and
The multitude becomes more like a mob,
The spirit of the Christ, compassionate
Yet strong, still urges us
To heal and feed and bless.
