Although I had visited churches...

Although I had visited churches of various denominations before becoming interested in Christian Science, I did not find the spiritual consolation I was seeking until I attended a Wednesday testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist, and listened to the words of Mary Baker Eddy's Communion Hymn (Poems, p. 75), which left me with a great sense of peace and inspiration. Since that time, which was over twenty years ago, the truth contained in Mrs. Eddy's writings has many times been proved for me and for members of my family.

One such occasion was the healing of one of my sons of infantile paralysis. He awakened one morning unable to move any part of his body. When I called a practitioner she reminded me of the story of Lazarus, which appeared in the Lesson-Sermon for that week in the Christian Science Quarterly. She emphasized the part where Jesus, after raising Lazarus from the dead, commanded those who were standing by to "loose him, and let him go" (John 11:44).

Immediately I saw the lesson in this experience. I had had quite a sense of pride in this boy and his accomplishments, and I saw that it had to be cleared out of consciousness and that I must realize he was in reality God's son, not mine; therefore, everything fine which he expressed had its source, not in him or in me, but in God, who alone deserved the glory.
