THE JOY OF OVERCOMING

In the second and third chapters of Revelation are recorded many promises of the good which will be bestowed upon one as the reward for overcoming. Among other things we read that he will eat of the tree of life and be given a new name, power over the nations, and an honored seat on the heavenly throne; and Revelation 2:28 declares, "I will give him the morning star."

While working long and faithfully to overcome difficult situations, when sorrow and discouragement may seem real and persistent, let us remember "the morning star"! It is sure to appear for those who patiently continue in welldoing, and it is sometimes just ready to appear when things seem darkest and most doubtful.

A mother who had watched and worked all night with her little one, who seemed in a critical physical condition, grew fainthearted and weary as the hours crept on. She had read the comforting Word of God from the Holy Scriptures and the precious truths contained in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and in Mrs. Eddy's other writings. She had firmly denied error and affirmed the truth and had earnestly striven to understand what she was declaring; yet there seemed no response from the child. Finally, in utter discouragement, she was about to leave the room and seek another's aid when she saw a faint glimmer of morning light creeping through the sides of the drawn window shade. To her it appeared as a star of hope, and she declared: "I have worked all night, and should I now give up just as the morning is breaking? No, I shall wait and continue to know, for I have glimpsed 'the morning star.' " Turning to the bedside of the child, she found her softly sleeping; and very soon, even as the morning light flooded the room, the light of God's healing truth in all its effulgence was made manifest in the healing of the physical condition.
