GOOD HOUSEKEEPING
The housewife has learned that good housekeeping is essential to the beauty and harmony of her home and the happiness and health of her family. The businessman has learned that good order at his office and in his factory is required for the efficient and profitable operation of his business. The seafaring man has learned that good order is necessary aboard ship for the safety of his crew and cargo. Humanity knows that cleanliness and orderliness are requisites of human well-being. But not everyone has yet recognized that good housekeeping in human consciousness is the primal essential for the welfare of all mankind.
As a result of the teachings of Christian Science many are learning that keeping human thought clean and wholesome through the truths of God and man is the most effective means of maintaining health and happiness. To those who have not yet learned the importance of such cleanliness Christ Jesus has given this stern rebuke and admonition (Matt. 23:25, 26): "Ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. . . . Cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also." Christian Science teaches one how to keep the inside of the cup and platter clean, how to establish order and harmony in thought. It declares that the spiritual understanding of God, divine Truth, purifies consciousness and keeps the mental household orderly and harmonious.
How does one go about his mental housekeeping? By first understanding something of the nature of consciousness, the mental household in which man lives. Real consciousness is wholly spiritual. Man's consciousness is the perfect reflection of the one infinite consciousness. Mind, God. It is therefore unlimited, pure, and indestructible. It is constituted of right ideas and perfect concepts. It manifests the perfect order of divine Principle and is illumined by divine Love.
