THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN GOD AND MAN

In his epistle to the Hebrews, Paul writes (2:6, 7): "One in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands."

In her matchless exposition of the all-important subject, man, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has provided the student with a terminology that enables him to understand what he himself truly represents as man. She has provided a vocabulary that with intelligent study emphasizes and develops every facet of man's true being. In line with the Scriptural declaration, man is image—God's exact image and likeness. He is the emanation of Mind, Life's manifestation and expression, that which evidences and bears witness to the fact that God is. He is the reflection, the revelation, and the unfoldment of Spirit. He is the effect of self-existent cause, the proof of Soul's being.

Throughout her teaching Mrs. Eddy emphasizes the oneness of being and the inseparability of God and man in that being. She brings out the logical distinction between Mind and idea, between cause and effect, between Principle and its idea, and yet at the same time shows their inseparable oneness or unity. On page 70 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Man is never God, but spiritual man, made in God's likeness reflects God. In this scientific reflection the Ego and the Father are inseparable."
