Churches of Christ, Scientist, Unite in Their Maintenance

[Portions of a report prepared for the Reading Room Division by the Houston Executive Committee supervising the activities of the new Reading Room]

Houston, Texas: The plan of a Christian Science Reading Room in the heart of downtown Houston which would be maintained by all of its churches for the convenience of strangers wishing to inquire about Christian Science, as well as for its students, has long been given thoughtful attention.

About sixteen years ago several members of one of these churches got in touch with their executive board in the interests of this plan. At their recommendation a committee was formed which was composed of an appointed member from each church. This establishing committee met at reasonably regular intervals through the years. Each member gave earnest metaphysical support to the furtherance of right activity in this direction, praying for divine guidance.

During the war years the thought came that a reference library would be needed for the Reading Room and that it could be prepared even though the way for establishing the room itself was not apparent. Letters were sent to the participating churches advising their memberships of the need for the periodicals to be bound for the prospective Reading Room. Bound volumes and back issues of the periodicals for binding began coming in.
