I was about seven years of age...
I was about seven years of age when my mother took her stand for Christian Science. She had been studying Science for more than four years, but as she and her relatives were very active in their former church, it was not easy for her to break away. However, one Sunday morning she told my older brother and me that she and the two younger children were going to the Christian Science church, but that we could do what we wanted to. My brother went with her, but I loved the companionship of those in the Sunday School I was attending, so I went my own way. The next Sunday, however, divine Love led me to the Christian Science Sunday School. I have always been grateful that my mother let God lead me, for never have I wanted anything but Christian Science since that time.
I have had a great many proofs of God's protecting care and of the truth that man is made in the image and likeness of God, Love. One healing for which I should especially like to express gratitude is that of a broken arm experienced by our young daughter. Her father and I thought it was the law of the state in which we lived that in the case of children broken bones should be set by a doctor; so we had an X ray taken. When, through the help of a practitioner, Mind revealed that we could work this problem out in Science alone, the temporary sling the doctor had made was removed. The doctor asked for a letter releasing him from responsibility, and we gladly gave it to him. No cast or material aid of any kind was relied on, and the law of God, as taught in Christian Science, was the only support we used. In three weeks the child was back in school, healed.
One phase of that experience which was so beautiful to me was the noninterference of the school authorities during those three weeks. The practitioner had reminded me that we were "hid with Christ in God". (Col. 3:3).
