GOD'S WILL UTILIZED IN DEMONSTRATION

In her writings Mary Baker Eddy makes clear the distinction that exists between the human, mortal will and will as an expression of divine Mind. As a quality of God, will is the motivating power of divine Principle. It is the spiritual force that expresses itself in righteous action and the demonstration of all that is good.

Throughout his ministry Christ Jesus continuously demonstrated that his whole purpose in being was to fulfill the divine will. He said (John 6:38), "I came . . . not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me;" and again at another time (Luke 22:42), "Not my will, but thine, be done."

Strong characters are not necessarily self-willed, but those who are very often subordinating the human will to the divine. The greatness of Mrs. Eddy's character lay in her determination and firm purpose to stand courageously by what she knew to be Truth in order that the human race might through the revelation of Christian Science be healed and saved, and it took spiritual volition to do that. On page 393 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man." This does not indicate a passive attitude nor an ignoring of or acquiescence in evil. It indicates the exercise of spiritual volition, and Christian Science teaches that we have the right to know that we reflect the will of God to do and be right.
