As a child I was considered delicate...

As a child I was considered delicate and manifested so-called childhood diseases and severe illnesses. When almost thirteen years of age I was suddenly taken ill. It was found that the appendix had burst and that peritonitis had set in. Later, as I lay unconscious in a hospital, the surgeon told my mother that he and several interested specialists who had been called in for consultation had done all they knew how to do and that I could not pull through. I weighed only forty pounds.

Because my brother and sister discussed this situation at school a neighbor, who had children in the same school, telephoned my mother to tell her of Christian Science. Mother sobbingly told her, "If it is God's will that she go, I am willing," but the neighbor quickly replied, "It is not God's will, and He doesn't know a thing about the condition." She told my mother of instances she knew of Christian Science healing, and this brought a new ray of hope to my mother, who asked the neighbor to telephone a practitioner and request treatment for me.

The practitioner drove to the hospital at once, where she met my mother. The nurses were not in my room when they arrived. Mother remained outside my door while the practitioner went in and stood by my bed audibly declaring the truth. It appeared that I was passing on. However, there was a slight rallying immediately, and when the practitioner came from the room, she and Mother discussed taking me home. The doctor who was summoned said, "She will not arrive alive." But my mother had put all her faith in God and signed waivers relieving the hospital of responsibility. A private ambulance was called, and my mother and a nurse accompanied me home. The practitioner followed in her car. Material law said that there was nothing to work with; God's law said that His child was at that moment expressing well-being.
