When I was a college student...

When I was a college student questions of a religious nature arose which my orthodox religion failed to satisfy. Much disturbed, I looked for satisfactory answers. A young man with whom I was discussing this situation said, "I have a book which I believe will answer your questions." That book was "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"' by Mary Baker Eddy. The first chapter, entitled "Prayer." was so satisfying that I read the book through and realized I had found a religion which completely answered my questions. I became an earnest student of Christian Science.

During the First World War I attempted to enlist in the Army but was rejected. The reason given was that I had a weak heart and could not stand strenuous service. Help was obtained from a Christian Science practitioner. A year later I was accepted and had several months of vigorous activity.

A few years afterward, while working out a problem of supply, I read these words in Science and Health (p. 326): "Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way." Upon examining my motives I realized that they were not altogether unselfish, as I had held to a line of action which was contrary to that which my associates wanted to take. Praying to be led aright, I asked help of a practitioner. Soon afterward I lost a position which I felt I sorely needed. However, I realized the work in Science had been well done, and I remembered what our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 307), "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn they give you daily supplies." I began to look for right ideas, and before long one came that brought a solution to the problem which was far better than any could have been if I had kept the original position.
